How to Do the "I'm So Sorry I Lied" Trend

The "I'm So Sorry I Lied" trend turns one old photo into a funny confession: a too-perfect version comes first, then the story slowly falls apart until your real photo lands as the punchline. This guide shows how the format works, how to make it from a single photo with our AI generator, and how it compares with building it by hand in CapCut.

Your first complete reveal is free and does not need an account.

ABOUT THE TREND

What is the "I'm So Sorry I Lied" trend?

It is a photo reveal told as a carousel. The first slide shows a polished fantasy — usually the childhood Halloween costume you say you wore. Each following slide takes back part of the lie ("Okay, it was a little more homemade"), and the last slide is the real, untouched photo with an apology like "I'm so sorry I lied."

The joke works because the gap between the dream and the reality is visual and personal. Most people post it as a swipeable photo carousel and add a sound inside the social app.

A typical four-slide structure:

  1. 1The movie-version costume

    The most polished fantasy.

  2. 2"Okay, not exactly…"

One exaggerated detail comes back down.

  3. 3A little more homemade

The story gets closer to the real photo.

  4. 4Your original photo

    The truth, unchanged.

STEP BY STEP

How to make the trend with the AI generator

Our I'm So Sorry I Lied AI Generator builds the whole reveal in your browser. You don't write prompts and you don't lay out slides yourself.

  1. 1Add your photo.

In the Reveal Studio, drop a photo into the upload area or choose a file. JPEG, PNG and WebP are accepted, up to 10 MB. Tick the box confirming you own the photo or have permission to use it. The photo stays in your browser until you choose to generate.

  2. 2Pick what you said you were.

Under "What did you say you were?", choose a story: Princess, Butterfly, Witch, Vampire, Black cat, Cowgirl, Superhero, Fairy, Pirate, Astronaut, Robot or Mermaid. If none fits, choose "Something else" and type a short idea (for example, "a fearless space explorer").

  3. 3Click "Make my lie."

The generator creates the AI stages of the reveal. Each AI slide starts from your original photo to help keep the person recognizable, and your original is always the final "truth" slide — it is never regenerated, beautified or filtered.

  4. 4Check the sequence.

Use the preview arrows to step through the slides: the dream, the confession, the almost-honest version and the original. You can switch the preview between 4:5 and 9:16.

  5. 5Edit the words.

Each slide has an editable caption. Rewrite it to sound like you, or use "Restore default caption" to go back. Captions are placed over the exported slide, not baked into the AI image.

  6. 6Download and post.

Choose "Download this slide", "Download Instagram ZIP" for the full set, or "Create slideshow video (WebM)". The slideshow is a simple exported video, not an AI-generated video, and MP4 export is not included in the current browser version. Upload to TikTok or Instagram and add a sound there.

QUESTIONS

FAQ

How do I do the I'm So Sorry I Lied trend?

Upload a photo you have permission to use, choose the costume or story you "told everyone", edit the captions, and download the carousel. Then post it on TikTok or Instagram and add the sound inside the app.

Do I need to write a prompt?

No. Pick a story preset, or choose "Something else" and add a short idea. The tool creates the image-edit instructions for each stage.

Does the AI change my original photo?

No. The final "truth" slide is the original file you selected. It is not regenerated, beautified or filtered.

Is it free?

Your first complete reveal is free and does not need an account. After that, one-time packs are $2.99 for 1 reveal, $5.99 for 3, or $11.99 for 8. Credits never expire, and a failed generation automatically returns its reveal. See Pricing.

Can I download it as a video?

You can create a simple slideshow video in WebM format, download single slides, or download an Instagram ZIP. MP4 export is not included in the current browser version.

Does it add the trend sound?

No. Exports are silent; add a sound in TikTok or Instagram when you post.

What happens to my photo?

Your upload is processed only when you choose to generate. Short-lived result references are kept to deliver the reveal, and uploads and results are not published in a public gallery. See Privacy.
